By using the broad match type you open up the possibilities for the keyword including additional keyword terms that Google figured were 'related' to your broad match keyword. Due to Googles interpretation of the keyword and what it considered to be related, it mean if you were using broad match extensively it required an equally large list of negative keywords to eliminate so called related matches.

So to recap the old match types are:

Broad match - This is the default option. When you include keyword phrases such as "tennis shoes" in your keyword list, your ads will appear when users search for tennis shoes and shoes, in any order and possibly along with other search terms like: new tennis shoes, mens tennis shoes etc. plus any other related term. Broad matches are less targeted than exact or phrase matches, but produce a large number of impressions.

Phrase Match - The ad appears when users search on the exact phrase and also when their search contains additional terms, as long as the keyword phrase is in exactly the same order. A phrase match for "tennis shoes" would display your ad if a user searched on: red tennis shoes, new tennis shoes, but not for: shoes for tennis.

Exact Match - The ad appears only when the search query matches exactly the keyword phrase. This means [tennis shoes] will only match a user request for: tennis shoes and not for: red tennis shoes, even though the second query contain the keyword.

Negative Keyword - If your keyword is "tennis shoes" and you add the negative keyword "-red", your ad will not appear when a user searches on red tennis shoes. Negative keywords are especially useful if your account contains lots of broad matched keywords.

The new broad match modifier feature allows you to have keywords that have a greater reach than phrase match and much more control than broad match. Including modified broad match to your ad groups can increase the number of clicks and conversions.

If you mainly use broad match keywords in your ad groups, changing your existing broad match keywords to modified broad match will most likely lead to a decline in your click and conversion volumes. To maintain volume, keep existing broad match keywords active, add new modified broad match keywords, and adjust bids to achieve your target ROI based on the results.

To implement the modifier, you put a plus symbol (+) directly in front of one or more words in a broad match keyword. Each word preceded by a + has to appear in your potential customer's search exactly or as a close variant. Close variants include misspellings, singular/plural forms, abbreviations and acronyms, and stemmings (like "floor" and "flooring"). Synonyms (like "quick" and "fast") and related searches (like "flowers" and "tulips") aren't considered close variants. Be sure there are no spaces between the + and modified words, but do leave spaces between words. Correct usage: +formal +shoes. Incorrect usage: +formal+shoes.

To sum up then, if you use the broad match feature with your keywords there are some gains to be made by implementing modified broad match. It will eliminate irrelevant queries, reduce impression volume but will increase click through rate and conversion rate.

Target the right audience by selecting the language and countries that you want to target. For example, I exclude all countries where English is not understood by a large percentage of the population.

2. Refine Your Keywords

Use square brackets "[...]" around your keyword/s.

For example:

[google adwords]
Your ad will only show when the search is for the exact keyword phrase you have included within the brackets.

The ad will not show for searches that include other keywords. In our example, this would be for searches such as "google search," or "google news."

3. Test Multiple Ads Simultaneously

Always test 2 (or more) ads simultaneously. This is what is known in the print industry as an A/B split test.

Find out which one produces the higher click through ratio. Then replace the weaker performing ad with a new one.

Continue this process in your never-ending quest to get the highest click through ratio possible.

4. Track The Return-On-Investment Of Each Ad

If an ad is for a specific product or service, create a landing page for the ad. Include relevant and useful information to convert the customer. Generally, a well designed landing page will almost always convert more visitors than if you simply sent the visitor to the home page.

11. Remove Common Words

Remove common words, such as "a, an, in, on, it, of, etc." Remove every word that does not absolutely need to be in the ad. Make every word count.

12. Deter Freebie Hunters

Deter freebie hunters by including the price of the product or service at the end of the ad. This will improve your overall conversion ratio and lower your average customer acquisition cost.

This may reduce your click through ratio, but that's OK. After all, you're not trying to target every body, only potential customers. In most cases, freebie hunters will never become paying customers.

You can write just about any article, even an eBook, for fun and profit if you know the "The 3 Rules for Writing Great Articles". These are the basic rules used by broadcast journalists to construct short, information-packed, articles.

Writing articles is nothing more than common sense coupled with a spell-checker program and a little imagination plus the 3 Rules I am about to share with you. First, though, let me tell you about how a high school dropout learned how to write by copying former CBS News Anchor, Walter Cronkite and by using his local newspaper. All he did was apply the "The 3 Rules for WritingGreat Articles".

I know you want to know the rules right now, right? Let me say, these are not my rules. These are rules known by all good writers. I did not invent them. They were taught to me and I simply use them every day.

Here they are:

Rule #1 - "Tell them what you are going to tell them". This, of course, is your headline, like my headline - "3 Rules for Writing Articles".

Rule #2 - "Tell them". I am already doing that, right? I started with the first sentence at the beginning of this article and I am telling you right now!

Rule #3 - "Tell them what you told them". This is the summary, a sentence or sentences that bring the whole point of the article into focus to give you something to remember. This Rule is applied at the end.

Back to our high school dropout.

He simply took a cheap tape recorder, recorded Mr. Cronkite's newscast every evening, played it back and typed exactly what Mr. Cronkite said. He studied it to see how the three rules applied. He did this over and over and over until he could write his own version of the story. When he felt confident, he showed his work to his wife and best friends for critique. He even recorded himself saying the stories into that little recorder, over and over and over. His dream was to be a radio newsman.

Our high school dropout also took the daily newspaper and re-wrote lots and lots of stories, reorganizing the facts, creating his own catchy headlines. Most important? He applied the "3 Rules" to every article. When he had articles he had some confidence in, he showed them to his wife and best friends for critique. He followed the 3 Rules for several months, working on his writing after getting home from his regular factory job in the evenings. He did this for hours and hours and hours. Practice, practice, practice!

So, where did all this hard work get him? You will be amazed!

Our high school dropout landed a part time job on Sunday mornings as an on-air newsman at a local radio station! His writing and passable radio voice got him that job. His fellow factory workers laughed at him. Made jokes. "You? Come on, get real!". But, did he quit there? No! He kept working on his writing and voice delivery. Hours and hours and hours!

Within 3 months he was full time on the graveyard shift. He quit the factory job and sold cars during the day to make up the difference in income between the factory and Radio.

About 3 months later he was on days, Monday through Friday, in prime afternoon drive-time! He quit selling cars because he was earning more than the factory job. Within 2 years he was a local TV News Anchorman! Two years later he was Anchorman and News Director!

Now, I must point out another key factor in his success. Many professional broadcasters and writers helped him grow along the way. He was never afraid to ask for help with how to improve his writing and delivery on-air. Pride never got in his way. The pro's were more than willing to offer advice and valuable tips! It was better than a college education.

Now, you may be thinking, "Jim, you made this guy up. This story is unbelievable".

Well, friend, that high school dropout is me!

My broadcast news career spanned more than 15 years. I won several national, state, and local reporting awards. I was a paid stringer for Associated Press and United Press International.

When you find a collectible, you then start a pile for yourself to buy when you are finished, never ask what the price is just for one item, nine times out of ten you will be able negotiate a better price when you have several items altogether, after all you help them unpack didn't you, that alone is worth something isn't it? Word of caution, it is better to shop in pairs, husband and wife is ideal.

While one is helping to unpack, the other plays the guard dog over the pile you have created, because the other dealers will take your goodies, they are not bashful to say the least.

There's no doubt that starting a home based business is a goal, or at least a dream, for many people. After all, just think of the positives: since you are the boss, you don't answer to anyone but yourself – except maybe your customers, you don't have to worry about the price of gas for the daily commute, and you can pick and choose your own hours and set your day up as you see fit.

However, there are some serious considerations you need to deal with before you venture down this road. Think it through, and ask yourself some hard and fast questions.

Likely, one of the foremost questions will be should you hold on to your current job, at least for the time being, while you work at establishing, or starting, your home based business. If you do, how many hours in a day will you be able to devote to your own business? Do you have any extra hours you can put aside either before or after the day at your current job, or are you willing to give up your weekends?

What about the logistics of where you will work from home? Do you have a room that you can turn into a home office, where you can be free from household distractions?

How much of your blood, sweat and tears are you willing to put into your new venture? What if there is a large learning curve? Will you stick to your determination and learn what is necessary? Even if your business is going to be around a hobby, craft, service, or anything else that you are already totally familiar with, don't be deluded into thinking you know it all. You may still have to learn all of the management aspects of running a home based business. You may be working from home now, but there will still be issues like bookkeeping to deal with. Will you do it yourself, or are you going to hire someone for these aspects of your business?

Once starting your home based business, do you know how to market it? People will need to know about you, so how are you going to make that happen? Are you going to market online or offline? Which would be most effective for your business? How much money have you put aside for these marketing efforts?

And another important question. How are you planning to finance your new, small, startup business? Do you have, or can you afford, all the equipment that will be necessary?

Don't wait to answer these questions. You should have thought all of this before you start your new venture.
